Canada Post says it’s burning through $1B loan, expects to run out of cash by year-end

I can’t help but wonder how absurd this headline would be if it was about fire departments or border control or something. Why do we run Canada Post like a business instead of a service? There should be no point where the threat of bankruptcy looms over a nations postal service.
Hmmm, Canada Post owns Purolator, correct?
Yes, Purolator has reported profits in recent years, including a profit before tax of $81 million in the second quarter of 2024. The company continues to be a leading player in the Canadian courier market.
To be clear, they’re „burning“ through cash right now specifically because of the ongoing labour dispute. That’s Canada Post’s official position, it’s in the article.
So, number 1, this serious cash drain will be significantly alleviated once the labour dispute ends.
Number 2, Canada Post shouldn’t be expected to run like a for-profit business, but rather a public service. Ideally it breaks even, and/or finds as many efficiencies as reasonable… but secondary to the service itself.
Number 3, it seems big-ticket shipments are at an all-time high. That’s on management to capitalize on, not the workers who sort and deliver the mail – those labourers deserve a living wage.
