      Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro was taken into preventive custody on Saturday, according to his spokesperson Fabio Wajngarten.

      Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years and three months in prison for attempting a coup d’état following his 2022 election defeat.

      But according to Wajngarten, Saturday’s detention wasn’t related to serving that sentence, but rather a precautionary measure.

      Held under house arrest since August, Bolsonaro, 70, was taken on Saturday to the Federal Police headquarters in Brasília, according to local media.

      The Federal Police said in a statement only that a preventive arrest warrant was being carried out in compliance with a decision by the Supreme Court.

      Brazilian outlets are reporting the arrest was made to guarantee public order in response to his son Flávio ordering his supporters to gather in front of his house in a „vigil“.
