Nor should they be. PEI can bloody well fund PEI’s guaranteed basic income pilot, and if they can’t even manage that then it should tell you everything you need to know about the viability of the concept as a whole.

So you’re telling me that a single program you want to trial, is more than your entire budget for everything else, and somehow you want someone else to foot the bill?
The federal government shouldn’t fund a single province’s UBI. That’s just every other province donating money to a single province.
PEI could take all the revenue that they spend on benefits programs that advocates say a UBI would replace. They could then defund those programs and split that money between the PEI residents. If that ends up being a bad thing, then don’t do UBI. If it’s a good thing, other provinces and potentially the federal government might follow.
Hard to argue your program is sustainable when someone else is paying for it and taking all the risk, while you yourself take none.
