The real solution to increasing EV adoption across Canada instead of government subsidies it is to make the market more competitive by finally allowing BYD and other Chinese manufacturers in.

That is a complete non-starter and completely non viable without rebates, without rebates it will take about 15 years to break even on the higher initial price of the EV compared to if you bought a Gas Hybrid and about 10 years to make up the price over a plain old gas engine. These rebates going away which they are with the feds stopping, BC stopping and many other provinces having no such program will effectively mean the death of EVs in Canada at the current price point and will limit these things to a niche lifestyle product.

In Australia BYD is selling EVs that are 24k and 32k AUD (22 and 29k CAD) entrypoint. If the government simply allowed the Chinese EVs into the market, adoption will increase without needing to provide subsidies in form of tax rebates. Even with the rebates the EVs available in Canada are not competitive with what BYD is offering in Australia. Only solution is opening the market up to the Chinese.
