The Gripen is well suited to intercepting Russian jets over the arctic, and it doesn’t come with capricious American strings. Sounds like a good deal.

The reality is there is no comparison to the F35 currently.
The Gripen could meet some requirements of what Canada needs in a CF-18 replacement, mainly domestically but it comes with a huge risk that it will be entirely obsolete within its lifespan and you require a much larger number of them to preform at the same combat rate as a gen 5 stealth aircraft.
The F35 runs at a dominance rate of 20:1 against experienced NATO pilots in modern Gen 4.5 airframes, its miles above anything else out there right now in terms of dominance, survivability, performance and productivity.
The issues with the US administration certainly add complexity to the situation that wasn’t previously a consideration, but in terms of an actual comparison between the Gripen and F35, there is a clear winner.

Gripen is an old 4th gen design, it can deal with Russia’s older jets and perhaps its dubious 5th gen stealth fighter that they are afraid to deploy in Ukraine.
But it is no match to the the F-35. Just look at how the Israelis used to against Iran’s state of the art Russian air defences. completely bypassed it to bomb Tehran.
