      ### UK Expands Green Energy Links: From VikingLink to NeuConnect with Germany

      Following the successful activation of the [UK-Danish VikingLink](https://www.energylivenews.com/2024/05/03/national-grids-viking-link-sets-world-record/), efforts are now underway to forge another significant energy pathway—this time between the UK and Germany. The new [NeuConnect project](https://www.energylivenews.com/2024/05/10/germany-uk-energy-link-moves-into-next-stage/) promises to further enhance Europe’s green energy landscape by enabling the direct exchange of electricity across national borders.

      NeuConnect, a £2.4 billion initiative, has moved into a pivotal phase with the commencement of foundation works for a UK converter station on the Isle of Grain. This project, spearheaded by investors including Meridiam, Allianz Capital Partners, Kansai Electric Power, and TEPCO, aims to replicate the successes of VikingLink by providing a stable, renewable energy-driven interconnection.

      VikingLink, recently hailed by the Guinness World Records as the longest land and subsea [HVDC interconnector](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-voltage_direct_current), [spans 757 kilometers and connects rural Lincolnshire in the UK with Revsing in Denmark](https://cdn.offshorewind.biz/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2021/03/18155052/NIB-signs-off-EUR-134-million-loan-for-Viking-Link-interconnector.png). It has already made a substantial impact by transporting over 1,800GWh of power since its launch, significantly contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions in its first year of operation.

      The [new UK-Germany link](https://www.kepco.co.jp/english/corporate/info/international/generate/images/neuconnect/mainvisual_neuconnect.jpg), NeuConnect, is anticipated to enhance the region’s ability to manage the variable nature of renewable energy. By connecting to Germany’s grid, [which still heavily relies on coal](https://i.imgur.com/ExRA2CB.png) and emits 297 g CO2/kWh in the last month, the UK can export [its abundant wind energy](https://www.energylivenews.com/2024/05/03/winds-of-change-uk-offshore-wind-sector-breaks-records/), thereby helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions. Conversely, this connection will provide the UK with additional energy support during periods when its wind turbines are less productive.

      NeuConnect is set to become a major facilitator in the European energy market, reinforcing grid stability and enabling more efficient use of renewable resources. Arnaud Grévoz, CEO of NeuConnect, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “With major construction also starting soon in Germany, the delivery of the first UK-German energy link remains firmly on track.”

      This initiative reflects a growing trend in Europe towards linking national grids to leverage regional strengths in renewable energy production. Projects like VikingLink and NeuConnect not only exemplify technical ingenuity but also highlight an evolving commitment to sustainable energy practices across continents.
