So many experts were in disbelief when Lee publicly mentioned the need for South Korean submarines to track China right before his meeting with Xi. I thought China would go ballistic immediately, but surprisingly China showed very little reaction thus far.
I think we are on the right track.
North Korea is currently actively working on their own nuclear powered sub. China has no good argument to dissuade South Korea from getting one, except maybe economic and political coercion.
These nuclear submarines are meant to defend against North Korea and China is naive.
Since they will be operating in the East Sea and the Pacific Ocean, they are truly meant to counter Japan.
All the players know this, which is why the reactions from North Korea and China are not intense.
