how about increasing physician training spaces so people don’t have to pick between public or private practice? There should be so many physicians that choosing one isn’t an issue at all. This is only an issue because of the arbitrary training limits we’ve put into place at universities in this country.
Everyone who wants to be a physician should be one. We should have so many physicians trained that some can’t get jobs and work at Starbucks.
Isn’t this pretty plainly against the conditions necessary for funding under the Canada Health Act? Is Smith just planning to call the feds bluff on this?
Also while this whole thing is a disaster waiting to happen, allowing pay to be determined by the doctor on a service-by-service basis (rather than a patient-by-patient), makes it even worse – giving doctors the ability to essentially just demand payment when it suits them in the context of an existing relationship that was previously publicly covered feels like it’s a nightmare for potential abuse.
In other words, most will move to the private services because of how shoddily the government has been treating them…

We’ll have an actual case to study and see if it ends up working better than the current system (personally I think it will – dentalcare has shown us a public/private system can thrive so no reason it can’t work with healthcare)

Then another $500 to get it ready and you will know now if you have cancer. What would you like to do?
Canada needs to stop this NOW, before it’s too late. Privatization is snaking it’s way in piece by piece. The public system is being starved, resources shifted to private, so some rich can get richer at our expense. And as the public system falls further, private prices will only increase. Our healthcare system will be destroyed.
