“Australians received a welcome surprise this week with the news that every household will soon receive **3 hours of free electricity every day**, as part of a world-first initiative to share the benefits of solar power. If successful, it could be a model for other to follow in a future that will increasingly be powered by sunshine.”

Actually free, including transmission fees and any taxes?
Here in Finland it is relatively common to get 0 or negative spot price, but everyone’ll still pay the electricity tax and transmission cost amounting to something like 4-10c per kWh

This is just a way to get people to upgrade their analogue meters to smart meters. They’ll pull the initiative sometime thereafter.

At some rare hours in Finland the electric companies pay you to use electricity when price becomes negative.

This is a brilliant way to take advantage of Australias sunshine. The free energy probably comes during peak sunshine hours. Why not take advantage of the peak hours to do something for the everyday people? It’s awesome

What are the most energy intensive activities I can do in this 3 hour period…

Free really should be a word stricken from the lexicon – this is not free; the citizens have paid heavily via taxes into this investment and will continue to pay for maintenance and upkeep. It’s not to say that this is bad in anyway and frankly the types of infrastructure and utility we should expect from government, but don’t call it free as if someone just decided to magic it into existence at no cost to the people.

Unfortunately this isn’t as good as it sounds. If you choose to go on this electricity plan, you pay more for the power you use out of this free period of time.
So it is only really beneficial for those that are home during the day and can run their dishwasher, charge their car, do a load of washing, etc. during this free period.

This is an interesting way to schedule overabundances and future planning of the grid.
Wonder if prices will will go up for the other 21 hours, though.

This becomes free. Another thing will have a price hike to cover the money the government loses from this. There is always a trade off

My supplier in the UK have been giving me free sessions whenever the grid has too much production.
Sadly, however, there’s absolutely NO FUCKING REASON why they are mandated by government to charge the normal unit rate by the exact-most-expensive method of production in the country. CCGT (gas) goes up… all electricity prices go up, regardless of their source.
So… it’s yet another „we could all live in a utopia, but fucking profit has been allowed to corrupt governments, utilities and daily life so that we’re all fucked over“.
It’s why I use my free sessions to charge up the LiFePo4 batteries that I bought, and from which I run a variety of my base load items, which is connected to the solar panels that I bought and fitted myself (not eligible for any solar grant, or would have to rent the panels, etc.), and which I’m expanding every year with the aim to be entirely utility-independent by retirement (for which I’m 20 years ahead of schedule, retiring in 25).
Every thing that I hate… is because of rich people, idiots, corruption and greed.

Lmao here in the Netherlands we’re paying extra costs due to our solar panels because it’s „overloading the net“ and „making it harder for the power companies“ after both them and our government pushed us to install them in the first place

But how will the citizens be turned into profit farms? This sounds way too good to be true.

You also have to have a smart meter installed, which are liable to complex pricing schemes which have been reported to be exploitative and too-confusing for many customers to understand, especially elderly customers. This is because electricity retailing in Australia was privatized years ago and now we have thousands of companies trying to sell the same product.

I’m Australian.Electricity and gas have been expensive for a while. I like initiatives like this new one, it helps people’s day to day life. But the bigger problem to fix is private ownership of our resources. We should all share in what’s under ground and have a treaty with our First Peoples so they are included and have a say too. Imagine each Australian’s standard of living if we all shared the wealth and not have a few billionaires and billion dollar companies take it and own it. Socialist democracy at its best. And before any Americans get angsty about communism – here’s the simple way to understand the difference: capitalism – anyone can be rich. Communism – no one can be rich. Socialism – no one should be poor. Add democratic process to it which is 1 vote per person and a fairer system for all results. It got us some free healthcare. And I get paid to do a PhD. Living on a giant island far away from the rest of the world has its perks. And the giant mote around us is full of guard-sharks. Now, don’t try to pat them…
