This election was overshadowed by Mamdani’s monumental win in New York, but another democratic socialist who campaigned on affordability was elected mayor! Congrats to mayor-elect Katie Wilson, who will also be Seattle’s first Millennial mayor! I hope that she and Mamdani can show America and the world that progressives and socialists can make life better and more affordable for everyday people.

Good. We need fresh people with fresh ideas who care about the everyday American

Wrong for a person who never held elected office before to be mayor of a city, but perfectly to have no political experience and become president. Yeah, that makes sense.

      Never held elected office?

      That’s a huge plus!

Have you seen our current political climate?

Interesting term, “affordability politics”. Does seem well workshopped I suppose.
My tenants pay below market rate. I cover their heating in the winter. I’m a bit leery of a politician masquerading on “affordability” while setting forth policy that will raise the cost of living.

Glad she’s only a mayor but this paired w/ Mamdani’s win is a little worrisome for me personally. This being said we all have different views.

What do you all here think of large cities electing self-styled democratic socialists? .

For all the people that say Bernie Sanders ideas are unrealistic, AOC’s ideas are unrealistic. There was a time not that long ago that rights for women and black people were unrealistic. You get good things for the country when you elect people with unrealistic ideas.

Another crazy come from behind lefty win in Seattle. Harrel was up 8 points on election night then the late mail in ballots started to arrive. Same thing happened at least twice with Kshama Sawant.

What a strange title. There are a lot of politicians that have never run and upset mayoral elections

I think it’s time to stop saying democratic socialist… social democrat carries far less stigma.

The former mayor fouled his nest pretty badly. Affordability was a secondary concern, at least for me.

Not stoked for this inexperienced mayor to learn on the job. Oh well.

    12. While good, I hope her inexperience doesn’t overshadow her term. I hope those around her in local government help rather than hinder.

She needs to shake up the SPD – my BIL is an overpaid dickhead detective…

Can’t wait for the DNC to continue to move further right because “the real problem with Kamala was that she was too radical”.

Man, with politicians like the ones we have, who needs experience?

I hope we can get some common sense socialist policies to work at the local level. However, if we don’t succeed I am afraid that the political blowback will be enough to snuff out socialism writ large.

If we can’t convince independents of the validity of good socialist policies we will never have real adoption.

    17. Gen Z doesn’t even remember 9/11 because almost none of them were forming memories when it happened. The boomers got distracted and forgot to indoctrinate them into capitalism properly, so now basically all of them are either democratic socialists or nazis, with no in-between

And the women trend socialist, and like in higher education, young women are vastly outpacing young men in political engagement because basic conscientiousness is considered mandatory for girls but optional for boys.

… patriarchy for the win, I guess?
