      This was always what I advocated for. I get that if you had 500 refugees a year at some point you may as well go “meh, you can just stay now” because it just wouldn’t be worth the admin but when it’s 100,000 that doesn’t work. This prevents refoulement while also reducing pull factors, if you’re in genuine danger you’ll stay for as long as that danger exists but only that long. It’s a good policy.

      Never understood why this wasn’t always the case. I.e you are granted temporary residence whilst there is something stopping you from returning home (war), but once that situation is over then you go back.

      Refugee status shouldn’t be a back door route to citizenship. That always felt like a kick in the teeth to legal economic migrants who have to jump through endless hoops and fees in order to stay here.
