It’s crazy how recent the settlement of New Zealand was.

The eggs they must have had to throw you into the sea for thousands of kilometers without knowing what will be on the other side. Or even if they will get anywhere.

This is actually not a very large timespan from an evolutionary standpoint. The current Taiwanese population looks very different from the Polynesian population in these islands. Does this mean they were driven out of Taiwan?

Who was the mad lad to jetted off to the middle of nowhere to discover Hawai’i? For all the others it’s island hopping but Hawaii was luck and balls

Wild how they don’t know if there’s anything or where anything is, and just send it and sail for thousands of kilometers hoping to find something.

A key thing to consider is these were deliberate colonization missions. They didn’t just have a random fishing boat get lost and fetch up somewhere new. They loaded canoes with whole families and crops and livestock.

It’s confirmed there was contact between Polynesians and South Americans.
Whether it was Polynesian sailors who came to the South American Mainland and took some Natives home with them or if it was Natives from South America (perhaps costal fisherman) who got swept out into the Pacific in a storm is uncertain, but whichever was the case they brought sweet potatoes (and DNA) with them.
I am assuming that for every arrow that represents a successful island discovery, there are 1000 deaths at sea by lost Polynesian explorers.

It’s so interesting that they missed Australia this vast land, but go beyond the sea to that far. And even to Madagascar.

This has cleared up one of my many ignorant misconceptions.
For a reason unknown to me I held the view that Polynesians descended from Inuit who had paddled south.
I learn something every day and this one is long overdue. Sorry about that Polynesia !

It took 400 years from Cook Islands to New Zealand? Crazy they had enough provisions on those lil’ ships

How brave were these fuckers? They had no idea if there was any land out there. Yet they still got into their dingy ass boat and just started sailing. Knowing they’d have enough water to just survive for what? A few weeks or a month max?

Wow, that was a long delay after reaching Samoa

I put this in a comment below, but if anyone is interested, [here’s a short vid](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj6DeRRdNDc) of Indigenous Taiwanese meeting Maori in NZ.
