That 13% drop in the U.S. since 1993 doesn’t surprise me but it does make me a bit sad.

It’s interesting that trust doesn’t necessarily correlate to safety.

63% trust in China is 2x the rate in Taiwan. Proof that Chinese communist system is superior to Western capitalist lapdogs!
*the 27% of respondents in China who replied “no” have been sent to reeducation camps to increase their trust in Chinese communism

Trust no one. Question everything.

I would need a more precise question in order to answer whether I believe „most people can be trusted“. I trust most people to behave normally, not attack or rob me or cut in line. But I don’t trust most people to look out for my interests.

„The UK includes England, Scotland, and Wales“. Maybe use the correct geographic term of „Great Britain“ then? Also, why separate out Northern Ireland? Why not just combine them so that the figures actually represent the UK?

I took some inner city teens on a field trip to an Ivy League school in a rural area and they were absolutely gobsmacked to see $1000 bikes left unlocked around campus.
It’s a neighborhood by neighborhood thing.

As a Dane I can certainly say that I’m very trusting of other Danes…
I once went to camp in a forest, when I arrived, with all my gear in a cart, I found out I had forgotten the most important thing: my portable stove, and I didn’t want to go back and pack everything back into the car again. Two strangers sat by the campfire spot and without thinking about it I asked them if they could watch my stuff while I drove home and got the stove.
They said yes and I went home got the stove and drove back, they were still there when I got back and so was all my stuff, including some expensive camera gear, completely untouched. Afterwards I realized it was a pretty amazing thing to be able to trust strangers like that.

Japanese people leave their wallet and phone at a seat in a cafe to reserve the seat while they use the restroom. I wonder if their low level of trust in this survey is most about being let down by people they know rather than inate distrust of people.

Oh yes, China is famous for its citizens being neighborly and caring about their community… Very trusting society.

Does anyone else see a slight negative correlation between trust and outwardly nice countries? For example, Brazilian & Nigerian people are known to be happy and kind people. But their trust levels are very low. But Scandinavian countries are known to be very stoic or “cold” but their trust is very high.

this is just „every map ever“
wealthier, un-corrupt countries with low inequality vs the complete opposite
although i think cyprus is a bit low
