TOKYO: Japan is trying to enlist retired police officers to fight bears as the nation battles a record wave of deadly attacks this year, a top official said Friday (Nov 14).

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara led a special ministerial meeting and approved a policy package that includes asking those with experience handling guns, such as retired police and soldiers, to join efforts to cull the animal.

    2. Trained soldiers and officers coming out of retirement to fight bears sounds like a summer blockbuster.

Me and my wife honeymooned in Japan back in April we decided to walk down Mount Hiei (just north of Kyoto) after getting the cable car up half way. We set off I said „there’s no bears in Japan right?“ No internet up there to check so we carried on and saw a sign saying in Japanese and English „Last confirmed bear sighting August 2024“ was a lovely walk down with a side of worry all the way

as soon as I read more attacks then usual few weeks ago I knew the only response would be to KILL them

    6. Where does the idea that retired police and military can be used for gun stuff come from? In the US there was a right wing push to put armed retired police and military in schools, to protect from shooters. First off, they are *retired*, Secondly, being former military or police does not magically confer competence with firearms. Third, safe to assume many of them stopped doing those jobs because they did not want to be around guns anymore. Fourth, is the idea that they will be cheaper than training actual professionals with guns to do the dirty work part of it? Like „We want people with deadly force readily available, but we don’t want to *pay* for that sort of thing“?

If you need to hunt bears, or protect your kids from armed madmen, pay for the hunters and training needed to do it. No one is getting a pat on the back when Ol‘ Joe the heavily armed former cop can’t get out of his chair fast enough to stop that bear. Good chance Ol‘ Joe becomes bear food himself.

    7. Why not just start a hunting season? Or better yet, start a TikTok trend that ground up bear bones, or some nonsense, give you giant boners. They will all be dead by the weekend.

Does anyone know how many people have been mauled by Japanese bears?

Is it two? Is it twenty?

I like how Japan’s plan for the elderly includes options like fixing broken nuclear power plants and hunting rouge bears.

      ….are they recruiting?

Can we enlist to go help in the Bear Wars??

    11. Guys, GUYS. This means Japan has declared WAR on bears.

If they don’t immediately achieve their goals with this cull, that will mean that Japan lost a war against bears.
