I hope my dad keeps his job he’s had for almost 30 years.
He’s probably fine because he’s a supervisor on the FiOS side but still these are real people who are losing there jobs and hurting real families who might not be able to afford food next month

Verizon had the market cornered and shit the bed thanks to the greed in the board room. Unfortunately, they won’t be the only company this happens to, but at least the C-Suite folks will be ok.

Good thing we haven’t had any jobs reports because of the shutdown. The next jobs report is going to be abysmal. In September we set a yearly record for the most layoffs in long time, and we still have 3 months of layoffs to add to the reports.

At what point does the K-shaped economy begin to erode social stability or result in complete political upheaval by an exasperated public? It really is looking like serfdom at this point.
burgeoning unemployment of young skilled labor, rising prices and poverty, a brazenly corrupt and incompetent administration, fed numbers/claims that the public cannot trust (or deceived by omission), delayed social services, raids and militant presence…. A complete disarray and uncertainty across BOTH party lines for common Americans.
All the while the rich are making and misallocating STUPID amounts of money. Of course, achieved by the exploitation of public welfare and tax dollars.
I’m Gen Z and the sentiment is that the American Dream and Middle Class is dead. Themes of cynicism and hopelessness across. I see Zohran’s win in NYC as a sign that the tide is turning.
Edit: To clarify, by “political upheaval” I was thinking more along the lines of party realignment or new ideological divides in consequence (not Coup d’état or revolution – hence my reference to Zohran)

I presume my phone bill will be lower now that they don’t have to pay all those people?

Verizon is a scummy company. The worst experience I’ve had with a utility provider. I switched to Mint Mobile a couple years ago and never looked back.

My dad won a wrongful termination lawsuit against Verizon in the early 2000s. They tried to fire him when he reached retirement age after 20+ years of working for them, and GTE before they were bought by Verizon.

Absolutely incompetent telecom. Came in to purchase single use prepaid sim cards. They wanted to text my phone to verify my identity, apparently the CA driver’s license, my credit card, their use of my credit card were not good enough. They could not send a text form their office tables to my AT&T cell phone on the table in front of me. Gives me great confidence when the international telecom can’t send a text.

I mean based on my recent experience they could cut their entire offshored support and not lose anything. Instead I’m sure they will just cut the people in the US that actually helped me. I made sure it cost them a lot of money for wasting my time at least (and nobody batted an eye at lots and lots of credits – says a lot about the company)

I wrote about this recently… on top of a recessionary environment, here we’re seeing the impact of…
• AI Efficiencies (lower labour needed)
• Using AI as cover for Layoffs to either: retain capital, impress investors, or offshore cheaper „cognitive“ labour to othet countries.
Odds are its a mix of it all. Not a good look
