Turns out, its not that simple and other countries also aren’t fans of China dumping cheap products into their countries that would decimate domestic industries…

Ok, I get stopping the flood of cheap chinese crap, but this is going to hit so many other international small businesses badly too, especially with the US having also already cancelled their de minimis rule.
I’ve ordered things from a Ukrainian company a few times, always under 150 Euro (though not by much), and those orders are about to become even more expensive now. Ugh.
Finally. The cost alone of handling all that garbage produced should be offset somehow (not to mention all the pollution making and transporting it).

I understand why this is happening and think it was about time we put some kind of stop to all the slop importing.
At the same time it’s a little annoying knowing that this will make buying small stuff you can’t find elsewhere (e.g. keychains) more expensive.

Half of the stores for home appliance or supermarkets are already full of slop, because people like it and it’s high margins.

They removed VAT exemption 4 years ago, so my country is getting paid when i buy stuff regardless. But thats obviously not enough. Same products are sold by importers for 5-10x the price so they must close the gap?
Same EU who criticized Trump for putting tariffs on Chinese imports which just forced people to buy the more expensive domestic stuff? (In this case just imported by a retailer instead and sold at 5x the price)

This is a pretty bad idea, I live in a poorer country and the cheap stuff you get off temu and AliExpress, like electronic components, phone cases, and even flashlights that are not as insanely expensive as they are in stores.

I will absolutely pay 10X for the made-in-china stuff if they first go through a European middleman.
AliExpress already add EU specific VAT to every order, don’t know why they can’t force Temu and Shein to do the same?
I look at my Amazon haul and what I so often find now in the supermarket next to me and I kind of understand why…
People are only saying that we will pay X% more to resellers for the products, but this is not the only problem.
The reality is that in the EU, you will find just a small percentage of all the goods from Temu, AliExpress, and Shein. And this is the most important loss.
It is so silly to see people being happy about those measures, which will require them to pay more money for a limited variety of products.
So, will they “simply” add local VAT + customs fees to all those €10 AliExpress orders?

These actions should be targeted at Shein and Temu specifically, not at every single seller from outside the EU. It’s very unfair. If I wanna buy a mousepad from Japan now I am gonna get hit with extra customs???

I’m not sure if making everythin from electric cars to standard consumer products more expensive to the average consumer is saving democracy – the EU probably accelerates Europes decline into populism and irrelevance.

Everyone, people are getting g tired of China doing industry wide dumping. So much garbage is made they just can’t stop or their economy falls apart.
One of the reasons custom duty exists is to protect domestic manufacturing. However, when there’s no domestic version of a product, or the duty is insufficient to make up the price difference, it’ll just be another tax on the consumer.
I haven’t been able to find a good analysis of the impact of end of de minimis exception the US undertook in July , other than anecdotes. DHL reported 30% drop in China-US package volume, but it’s very hard to say how that impacts the consumer economy as a whole.
