I guess my question would be what does increased productivity really entail for the public sector? Does that mean we make our services worse by making it harder to be able to talk to someone? Maybe we should run skeleton crews and forsake IT security too. I’m sure no one will mind CRA getting hacked just like all of the private companies out there.
I’m of the opinion that governments shouldn’t be run like businesses, because that’s just not what they are.
Even in the US, public sector productivity growth lags far behind private. She makes a good point that analyzing productivity by sector is important. Comparing ourselves to the US we look terrible because investments in technology have been weak. The GDP per capita that the tech sector in the US contributes is massive. The SF Bay Area has the highest city level GDP per capita in the world, other than some tiny outliers.
But ultimately it IS the business community that invests in tech, through supporting venture funds or creating their own investment vehicles. But the private sector never stepped up to create a true tech ecosystem. Has Linamar actually invested in R&D and tech, or do they just play second mover all the time and take safe bets when it comes to productivity gains? Do they offer competitive salaries to the top Canadian engineering graduates or watch them take US offers with double the pay and shrug their shoulders? She can talk the talk but show me where your investments have been lady, I don’t believe you.

She almost had an epiphany moment where she talks about how much of US „productivity“ is just FINTECH that make millions of dollars per worker, but these types of people can’t help but attack the public service and Post Media can’t help but make that the headline of her comments, despite them clearly being a small part of it.
