The European Commission on Wednesday unveiled the European Democracy Shield, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening EU democracies and countering hybrid online disinformation campaigns from foreign actors.
The package of measures focuses on safeguarding key pillars of democracy, including free and fair elections, independent media, and a vibrant civil society, while promoting citizen engagement and societal resilience, according to a statement.
„Democracy is the foundation of our freedom, prosperity, and security. The European Democracy Shield will reinforce the core elements that allow citizens to live our shared democratic values every day,“ European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
More like they want to control information and censor whatever they don’t like.

To be clear: They’re absolutely correct that there’s a flood of targeted disinformation on social media by China and Russia right now, and the algorithms have become Trumpified on YouTube. it’s become a very dark place, but at the same time, the internet is still populated by actual users. Reddit is. And we like talking to each other. What I also hear in this „democracy shield“ is protectionism and fear, or even irritation with the fact that we are sharing ideas and thoughts, and I can’t support a move to block Russian disinformation if it hits everyone else in the crossfire.
