Police in Fukutsu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, detained a man armed with a knife at a shopping complex on the evening of November 9.
Video footage shows officers aiming their handguns at the suspect during the incident.

The suspect, identified as Kazuhiro Fujibayashi, 20, unemployed and a resident of Kitakyushu City, was arrested at the scene and later referred to prosecutors on November 11 on suspicion of violating Japan’s Swords and Firearms Control Law and preparation for murder.

According to investigators, around 5:30 p.m. on November 9, Fujibayashi allegedly carried a knife with a blade about 20 centimeters (8 inches) long inside the shopping facility.

A witness told reporters, “There was a man shouting loudly while holding a long knife. Police were trying to talk him down. I saw the knife being taken from him and sliding down to the floor.”

Police began their surveillance after a former girlfriend of Fujibayashi—who works at one of the stores in the complex—had contacted police, saying, “My ex-boyfriend might show up at my workplace.”

Investigators said that a day before the incident, Fujibayashi had made a store reservation under a false name, but the listed phone number matched his own, prompting officers to be stationed nearby for precaution.

When Fujibayashi arrived at the reserved time, officers approached him. He reportedly shouted, “There’s a bomb in my bag! I’ll push it!” and pulled out a knife.

Additional officers quickly arrived and subdued him. During the confrontation, two officers drew their service pistols and aimed them at the suspect but did not fire.

Police later stated that drawing their weapons was appropriate because Fujibayashi showed resistance and posed a threat to people nearby.

At the time of the arrest, Fujibayashi was also concealing two additional knives.

Investigators believe there was a financial dispute between the suspect and his former girlfriend and are continuing to examine his motives.
