AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED?
The first independent Polish government was formed on the 7th of November 1918, which would mark this date, and not the 11th, as a date when Poland regained its independence.
A telegram sent by Marshal Piłsudski before ww1 peace treaty that would legallly allow such state to exist concluded:
To the President of the United States,
To the Royal British Government,
To the Government of the French Republic,
To the Royal Italian Government,
To the Imperial Japanese Government,
To the Government of the German Republic, and to the Governments of all warring and neutral States
As Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Army, I wish to notify the warring and neutral governments and nations of the existence of the Independent Polish State, comprising all the territories of a united Poland.
The political situation in Poland and the yoke of occupation have not, until now, allowed the Polish nation to speak freely about its own fate. Thanks to the changes which have occurred as a result of the brilliant victories of the allied armies – the restoration of Poland’s independence and sovereignty is henceforth an accomplished fact.
The Polish State is arising from the will of the entire nation and is based on democratic foundations. The Polish Government will replace the rule of force, which has weighed heavily on Poland’s destiny for one hundred and forty years, with a system built on order and justice.
Relying on the Polish Army under my command, I hope that henceforth no foreign army will enter Poland before we have expressed our formal will on the matter. I am convinced that the powerful democracies of the West will grant their assistance and fraternal support to the Reborn and Independent Polish Republic.
