This is kind of a shitty headline.

They don’t mean scrutiny in the same way that the Trump administration is actively checking visitors‘ social media for criticism of Dear Leader, they mean how foreigners in general often want to talk about and criticize Trump when they recognize Americans abroad, and are sometimes a bit rude about it.

Seems fair, if you ask me.

I’m a Canadian traveling in the Netherlands right now and I’m getting pretty sick of being mistaken for an American. Immediate change of attitude as soon as I identify myself as not-American

Went to Italy, France and Monaco a month ago and we got asked a lot about how we are doing and what is going on in the US. All we could say was “the people embarrassing us right now don’t really travel. We’re some of the good ones, believe us!!!”

    4. Goddamn right. Trump voters have ruined America’s reputation and should be subjected to scrutiny and shunning abroad

I’m about to head out to Madrid in 2 days and I don’t look forward to being pestered about it in Spain lol. Just gonna mind my own business. Yeah he’s around but I didn’t vote for him and we’re stuck with him for 3 more years so it is what it is

Yep. Was appropriately ashamed of America for 8 years under Bush. Am appropriately ashamed of America for 8 years under Trump.

People think he’s a dumb garbage monster because he’s a dumb garbage monster.

There were definitely some polite inquiries on my last trip. People want to know what the hell we’re thinking.

Don’t pretend to be Canadian. Just own your shit, admit the mistakes America made and go about being a decent human being.

    9. A MAGA voter should absolutely welcome being questioned like this if they find themselves in another country. Indeed – it’s exactly how they want to treat anyone that doesn’t look like them or have a gold cross around their fucking necks in America.

    10. I have a clean conscience. I didn’t vote for him. I voted straight blue since 08

But half these maga scum lie

I truly hope that the majority of people in democratic nations abroad are horrified by what they’re seeing in America, because my biggest fear is that we’ll see a huge wave of far-right leadership across the globe.

If Trump’s administration turns more people abroad against far-right politics, then at least it will have had some unintentional positive effect. I want to believe that the US is largely an aberration and doesn’t represent a larger global regression toward inequality, religious extremism, science denial, etc.

Everyone who voted for Trump is a traitor to this nation…every election cycle.

    13. Good. They deserve shame, ridicule, and ostracization for the rest of their lives.

Got along great with almost everyone I met in Munich after saying fuck trump

I travelled to Cuba in Feb and March of 2017. I was constantly asked what I thought of Trump. Everyone I encountered liked Obama and thought Trump was an idiot or a psycho. The average Cuban is more informed than a huge swath of the US electorate.

Going to Amsterdam Thursday can’t wait to tell everyone how much I didn’t vote for him.

The unexpected good version of “But what kind of American are you?”

    18. This was definitely a thing during his first term too. But, I imagine much worse during this shit storm dumpster fire.

    19. Good. Fuck em. You want to be antisocial no one else owns your the reciprocity you don’t give

    20. Can confirm. Traveled in Germany for a few weeks. Any amount of casual conversation would turn to the “who did you vote for” angle. The folks with questions were earnestly wanting to know just how such an immoral and vacuous simpleton could get so much support. I didn’t sense anger very much. Just disbelief and disappointment.

Most non-Americans view Trump a bit like a toddler holding a gun. We will tell the toddler anything they want to hear to try and avoid the gun going off (which seems to be why Trump thinks he is “respected”) and we are trying to collect as much support as possible to contain the problem. If you look at any interaction through the “toddler with a gun” lens, it will help things make sense.

    22. As they should. Anyone who’s voted for Trump is responsible for fucking up not only the US but international order. Most everywhere common people are worse off because of them.

    23. TheSolitaryRugosan on

I think that Trump supporters should be barred from traveling out of the country. They’re international security threats.

I’m happy to welcome Americans to Australia, and who they voted for will most likely not be a question I ask, but if I were to find out that they’re MAGA, I will absolutely no longer be interested in talking to them or hoping that they have a good time here anymore.
