Ich habe eine amerikanische Frau, die versucht, wie meine Mutter zu kochen, die Irin ist. Sie macht einen tollen Job, meine Mutter hat ihr jede Menge Dinge beigebracht, das Essen ist nie ganz perfekt, aber trotzdem sehr gut. Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob ein irischer Sohn jemals glauben wird, dass jemand so kochen kann wie seine Mutter :).
Also, meine Frau macht einen guten Speck und Kohl, wir essen ihn heute, es ist und bleibt mein Lieblingsessen, auch wenn Lamm mein Lieblingsfleisch ist.
Aber vor ein oder zwei Wochen sagte sie, sie würde Speck und Kohl zum Sonntagsessen machen. Ich war sofort stehengeblieben und sagte "Nein, an einem Sonntag darf es keinen Speck und Kohl geben". Sie fragte warum, und ich konnte nicht antworten. Ich habe nur gesagt, dass du es nicht kannst, und sie meinte: "ok, das ist seltsam".
Seitdem hat sie meine Tante und meine Schwester getrennt gefragt und beide sagten dasselbe, aber niemand hatte einen wirklichen Grund.
Kommt das häufig vor? Gibt es dafür einen religiösen oder kulturellen Grund? Ist unsere Familie die Einzige, die so ist, sind wir die Seltsamen? Meine Frau versteht einfach nicht, warum nicht, es macht für sie keinen Sinn und wir haben keine Antwort für sie.

Your wife is right, of course you can have bacon and cabbage for dinner on a Sunday if you want. You can have a cheese toastie for Sunday dinner if you want.

I guess it’s because Bacon and Cabbage is week day dinner and for Sunday dinner you splash out on a roast of something.
It’s just culture rather than religion. It’s a traditional farmers dinner.

You’re right. Certain dinners are banned from eating on a Sunday.
Sunday food is either full on roast dinner or dirt from a take away if dying.
Nothing else is permitted.
It makes no sense as to why you couldn’t have bacon and cabbage for dinner on a Sunday, it’s a day of the week like any other.

Wow, I had never thought about this as a rule. But thinking back to all the times my Ma has cooked bacon and cabbage, she never cooked it on a Sunday. And when I am visiting back home and am asked what I would like to eat, it’s always bacon and cabbage on a weekday, except for Friday. Friday my request is smoked cod.
