I’m retirement age, and would have been dismissive of national service when I was 17, but now.. the world is a different place, I think it’s a good idea.
IMHO, Britain should incentivise 2yrs national service, it would help with integration of all communities too. Reservists, and diverse specialist groups too. National security is woefully inadequate across the continent.

If you pay people more, more people will join. But countries would rather resort to methods that are either cheap and ineffective or cheap and restrict human rights.

turns out if you have a society where there isn’t widespread intergenerational poverty and where college and healthcare are free at the point of use, young people don’t feel compelled to join the military

It’s hardly relevant to the subject matter, but I find it kinda funny that the image they put in this article is 100% an Italian soldier with the Belgian flag crudely photoshopped on top of the Italian flag patch…

After running it into the ground they’re looking for volunteers…

Why does belgium even need a military? Who’s going to attack them france? Or those dam pesky swiss trying to make sure they have the best chocolate

I live in the USA and I would refuse to volunteer for military service because our country is ruled by an oligarchy that has split the populace into haves that blame each other for most problems. The oligarchy is by far the biggest source of the problems.
Why would I risk my life to keep such a system in place?
I’m curious, is it similar to this in Belgium/greater Europe?

yes, this was announced when the new government took office at the end of last year.
it will include a maximum of 500 people, out of 149.000 that will receive the letter.
it’s not „a step toward militarizing society.“ by any means.

TIL people who are not qualified to drive apparently are qualified to shoot at people.

I think this is a good direction. For me as a Finn, defending my homeland is a given and all men are required to get military training here. Mandatory military service would do good for Belgium and other European countries aswell. It might just de-pussify our continent!

Belgium has one of the more flexible reservist systems which you can fit reasonably well together with studies or work, and from where you can take on missions case-by-case, which are mostly chill and things like being stationed in Romania for a couple months as a part of shoring up NATO’s eastern flank. Hardly the meatgrinder.
It should also be noted that in Finland for instance every male gets called up at age 18 and will at some point have to do compulsory military service so getting a letter about it just before you turn 18 is hardly shocking conduct, though I suppose it would look better if people got the letters when they turn 18.

Shall we stop Painting Students being admitted to the art university or keep winking them through in Austria?

Ah yes let’s recruit children to die in a meaningless war when they don’t know any better.

Here in the UK, 170,000 people applied to join the Army in 2023-2024, and a handful actually got through because of shitty recruitment and critieria hoops.
That is over 2.5 times the entire size of the professional army rejected in one year.
This myth that there is a recruitment crisis is bollocks and I suspect it’s the same in Europe. Make recruitment easier and modernise the medical criteria, and i promise you a lot of these issues go away.
Its the one conspiracy theory I actually believe. They do it on purpose to keep costs down and shove money into the arms of companies in charge of this farse.

Kinda hard to convince people when 1. There isn’t any immediate threat to Belgium from any direction so it’s hard to sell people on board of “defend the homeland”, 2. Any war Belgium will most like be involved in would be defending a nato country, and it’s kinda hard selling to people to die for freaking Estonia

They better be seizing Russian assets instead.
Come on Belgium, you don’t have to come to this.
You have volunteers like [this bloke](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWT69kKI7s0) still waiting to get enlisted in your army…
What 17 year old was not encouraged to join? I support the idea of a one year draft like they had in the past. Can’t trust their neighbors too much
Lmao, right winger little shits soiling their pants. Usually they’d go „eUROpE iS bEiNG InvADeD!! We MuST dEFEnD It!!“
$$$
It regards.. 500 in total but they do plan to eventually upgrade this number.
The Belgian army is a joke
