Germany „Cute, but let’s switch to English“ ?! Have the creator ever been there? I doubt it…

Can’t attest to the others, but… lol that is the EXACT reaction I had in France. Not saying my French is good, but I tried… thought they’d at least appreciate the effort!

    3. I once walked into a cafe in Paris. The waiter said bonjour and I said bonjour back. Then he immediately switched to English and apologised. Apparently, my French was so bad that he apologised to me based on one word alone.

And for the record, I found people in Rome were far less friendly than people in Paris.

    4. 10 years ago, I tried to speak Russian to my GF and her friend. They said I sounded like a hillbilly and to stop butchering their language. Apparently, it’s not complimentary to women to have a country accent is they grew up in the city. I decided not to proceed forward with learning her birth language.

I have found the French really do appreciate it when I try to speak French.

    6. Alors que la véritable réaction d’un Français est: « Dieu merci, mon interlocuteur parle un peu français, je n’ai pas à me ridiculiser en parlant anglais »

Once met a transfer student from Germany, tried to talk with my pathetic German, he just smiled and replied in English

Then I heard from my friend who is working in Germany that they just dont want to bother correcting my less-than-elementary school-level German so he forced me to converse in English.

He is from MĂĽnchen and I heard they are just like that

Most, if not all, Germans dont mind continuing the conversation when I’m speaking in their language. What is this map on about?

    9. As an Italian American visiting Italy when I was a kid, I always made friends quickly with Italian kids cause we would bond over trying to learn each other’s languages. Cute memories ❤️ Haven’t been back in a while.

Regarded map, the French need to hear you speak French instead of English if you want any help, the Germans even have their Pokemon named in German names, the Dutch are too self conscious about their accent to actually start speaking English willingly.

Only accurate representation within this map is that of Finland.

    11. This is bullshit. If a foreign person tries to speak Irish (or Welsh or Manx or Scottish Gaelic or Scots) then they’ll be met with fascination and encouragement.

People in ireland would not react when you speak in irish to them cuz they probably would not even understand what you are saying

    13. Not true, in Ukraine I’d say people are super impressed and it helps with further development of communication/good attitude

This is whim based on stereotype. I’ve been laughed at trying to get by on my pidgin Italian many times. No instant friendship unlocked.

Tried to speak my even worse French and they just switched to English. No drama.

Almost like there’s no guide at all to how this works.

And it’s not very funny either so…

another bs instagram map. Germans dont want to speak english in Germany. I doubt the one who made the map has even been there even once in their life

    16. I live in Switzerland atm and people constantly try and speak English with me… it’s cute, but let’s not guys, your English is atrocious

Suggesting that this might be a Paris vs outside Paris phenomenon. If you take your decades old high school French to tourist and busy areas of Paris, then it will be quickly substituted to English for efficiency’s sake. But, my somewhat proficient B1-ish French worked just fine in Montpellier.

    18. friendlyfernando on

Not sure there would be “no reaction” exactly if you tried speaking Irish lol

Ireland needs a new colour, corresponding to „you speak our language? I wish I did.“

    20. This should be how we classify Europe IMO.

Perfect outlines for east, west, south and central/northern Europe.

    21. I have only ever met positive reactions from the French when you try to speak French. Which I speak quite well now, but not that well at all just after leaving high school… but I just spoke the French I knew and tried to figure out what they were saying. Also friends who are not that good at speaking French did not meet hostile reactions.

How the hell is Slovenia not blue? I speak Bosnian and whenever I meet a Slovenian we always get along

    23. Truth about Germany: Many people don’t speak English (or don’t want to) even in the largest cities. More people are English-friendly in Denmark than Germany in my experience.

    24. Have you ever been to Germany? They rather have you speak shitty German than they have to speak shitty English.
