I still think this is a really interesting idea though. Von Neumann probes (self replicating exploration drones) are, I think, the most likely way we will encounter alien species, either finding an alien probe or building our own. They can travel at relativistic speeds and do not have the downsides of aging or the need for a pressurized cabin etc. Their progress is exponential as well, which is really what you need to map out a whole galaxy.
