    1. Well, this disgrace of a prime minister we have is a slave owned by the separatists, this is not news.

    2. So stupid to add more languages to EU. Put the Catalans in school and teach them Spanish instead, how hard can it be?

With how difficult it is for the EU to reach a consensus, there’s not really much appetite within the union for accommodating separatist/independence movements.

If I had to guess, this is intended more as an indirect goodwill gesture by Spain toward Portugal by presenting itself as „tolerant of language differences“, in a bid to further integrate the Iberian peninsula so the region is more competitive and politically relevant vis a vis France – Germany – Italy.

This is literally being advocated by Spaniards, btw.

    4. If Europe has 24 official languages then Catalan especially would seem to have a pretty strong case to be within such an expansive group.

If Andorra ever joins the EU I assume it would be added then anyway.

    5. It’s a good idea. Culture should be recognized and preserved. Languages like Basque and Catalan should be recognized.

    6. Catalan needs to be protected and fostered. It is a treasure of European culture, just like all European languages.

That being said, we need to make the EU more efficient. We need to have faster, more productive bureaucratic processes. We need to be more competitive internationally. I’m not sure that adding yet another official EU language is conducive to that goal. We can foster Catalan, improve its presence in society and education without making the EU even more unnecessarily bureaucratic.

This is just a move made by a weak PM seeking to shore up support from his coalition partners. We shouldn’t indulge him.

    7. Jesus Christ, we should be moving towards a more efficient system, i.e. using English as lingua Franca, instead of add yet another language to slow down all the bureaucracy
