Gilligan:
>There’s a lot of ways to reboot Breaking Bad and even build shows around characters from Better Call Saul. We worked with such a murderer’s row of actors on both shows. I was so blessed to work with these amazing actors. Pretty much any of the major players from either show could carry their own TV show. The same goes for the astounding actors we worked with on El Camino. The two Scotts, [MacArthur and Shepherd], God, those guys are good. And, of course, there’s Jesse Plemons, who everyone in the world knows now. That guy went through the roof, and deservedly so.
>So never say never, but I’ve done 20 years of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. I’m not tired of it. I’m not worn out on it. But I am ready for a hero, for a change, instead of a villain or an anti-hero. The other thing is I live in fear of messing up people’s memories of both shows. I’d rather leave a little money on the table, a little desire on the table, a little want for new Breaking Bad stories. I don’t want to disappoint anyone, but I’d rather disappoint folks by not giving them any more Breaking Bad than have them say, “Okay, man, that was a really great multi-course meal, but that last serving in the dessert bowl was dog shit. Now I’ve got a bad taste in my mouth, and that’s all I remember now.” So I don’t want to do that. I really don’t want to do that.
I’d love a novel in 10-20 years if Vince G had more to expound on with some side characters and what not, but that’s about it. Better Call Saul was such a miracle of a sequel / prequel series I don’t think they should try touching this world again in that same format.
I wish the Walking Dead followed that lead.
After Pluribus I’d like to see him tackle a historical drama of some sort, ideally a time and setting not often represented in western media, but I don’t know what interests him in those areas.
Pluribus is in Albuquerque
El Camino already tainted that well
In an industry that absolutely loves to run franchises into the ground with countless spin-offs, sequels, and reboots, I appreciate this. The BB/BCS franchise is damn near spotless.
That’s the way to do it Vince.
I think the only Breaking Bad spinoff that makes sense at this point is the POV of Walt’s daughter. Way down the line.
Not a crime drama but psychological coming of age story. Like all the effed up shit she must have gone through growing up.
Tone would be very different but you could have cameo characters from the BB universe. Maybe subvert expectations in later seasons with a crime element but ultimately it would be Holly’s story
I fucking love this answer. So many directors and studios want to water down a franchise so they can drain it to the very last drop (looking and you fast and furious). It’s refreshing to have a person who’s had a majorly successful series and a successful spinoff, say that he’s basically not gonna milk it anymore than it already has been.
Smart.
Look at Game of Thrones. For me and many others it was my favorite show ever… Until the last season really. There was a dip in quality near the end but I was okay with it. The final season was just so stupid and rushed that it ruined the entire show for me. No desire to ever rewatch it because it all leads to the same dumb ending.
Game of Thrones was literally everywhere. Now it’s basically gone entirely. Should have been a Star Wars / LoTR level franchise.
Hear me out: Vince Gilligan Half-Life TV show about Black Mesa and the lead up to the Resonance Cascade.
Literally what more can be brought from the BB universe? I always thought they could do a “tell tale” like game with Mike, but nothing revolving another 5 season show. I’m so happy Vince decided to release Pluribus, and I hope in the future he keeps making original stories.
I think a pre-prequel about Mike’s time as a cop would be hilarious.
Story keeps going back in time as Banks gets older and older.
Eventually wayyyy down the line you’ll get an “Old man Pinkman” series where some young kid recognizes him from some documentary that was done on WW and then Jesse has to run and hide in Alaska
I’ve always thought the Salamancas would make a great subject of a series. So many interesting characters.
Thank god. It’s ok to leave art alone. Not everything needs to be milked dry.
Game of Thrones syndrome is what he meant.
E.g., *The Many Saints of Newark*
I mean, tbh, that was kinda what El Camino was for me .
That’s fair. If he doesn’t have anything significant he wants to say or expand in the BB universe, then there’s no need to force it with something watered down.
El Camino already falls in that category for me tbh
Smart. Unlike certain other producers / directors.
The man’s got respect for this thing of ours
Knowing when to stop something is also a great talent. Vince really gets it. You only love and want more because it was so good. He’s right, why ruin that?
Would have liked a Hank prequel, but he’s fairly old for that now.
i don’t seem to understand something
1) why do people keep asking him about spin-offs, it’s clear that he’s a man of integrity, and he won’t do another Breaking Bad project for the sake of it;
2) what spin-offs do they even ask for? It takes a minute to think how pointless a show about Gus or Mike or Flynn could turn out. It’s almost like some people want their fanfics turned into seasons of TV without realizing there’s no way to make an exciting and distinct show about them
Huell: A Breaking Bad Story
Ok, I get his point and totally appreciate it. I also think that he could make a spin-off series about, oh let’s say Skinny Pete, and it could rival Breaking Bad itself (much like Better Call Saul did).
The man doesn’t make bad television.
Himym and GoT can both be presented as excellent series that had an absolute belly flop of a finisher and it tainted the view of the entire thing as a result.
Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 were amazing, Book of Boba and Obi Wan were not as much.
I agree; Sometimes its better to leave on a high note than overstay by a mid season or rocky spinoff or two
