      Manufactured Landfill.

Edit: I’m all for people having hobbies and things they like. But idk, seems like mostly kids are duped into buying esentially a cheap lump of plastic rather than a new game or toy.

In the same vane as kids who are now buying cosmetic and boosters where there use to be/ are games where playing the game is rewarded.

      It hooks into FOMO.

I admit to owning one, it was a present. It’s has nice memories associated with it.

    2. Everyone with 10000 of those are salivating, hoping that now they turn into collectors items..

    3. The people who love them already nerded out and have all their hobby versions they want.

They even have one of themselves.

People not into Funkos think they’re tacky and pointless and no matter how many versions exist that won’t change people’s opinions.

People don’t really change hobbies enough to be able to desire more types of Funko Pops.

The next generation of Beanie Babies goes into the night. Hopefully just scalpers left holding the bag.

      (Except Beanie Babies were cool!)

I’m not sure this is *world* news.

Anyway,  I think their portfolio grew *way* too much with minimal differentiation. I feel like they either needed more diverse core products or a smaller portfolio with more limited releases to encourage completionism.

    6. I’m surprised it lasted so long. It was a fad that survived for decades before losing its relevance. You can only make a Funko for so many IPa and pay so many fees before you run out of ideas. Or people move on.

    7. There’s Just So Many of Them…

In a way, it’s great because they do stuff for properties that otherwise have no official merch. I can’t recall anything coming out for the Fifth Element aside from the Funko figures they did. And there’s tons of other examples. But at the same time, there’s just way too many of them.

I sell at nerd cons and every other booth it seems is selling Funkos. Maybe just a few, or it’s just an entire booth or two loaded with nothing but funkos…

They saturated the market and thought expanding into media and gaming with a mediocre result would be a good idea… ballooning expenses in an absurd manner. There are piles of unsold boxes everywhere.

    9. GameStop, FYE, and various bookstores just felt a terrible cold shiver they can’t explain

    10. Production is too high. Too many individual product types.  Too many repetitive issues.

      They pushed too far.

    11. I don’t own any funkos but I find all the hate in here for them extremely forced and weird. wtf did these things do to you all? Lmao

    12. I’m 43 and have never owned a funko pop. I only use them to identify which of my friends on Zoom are nerds and to what degree.

    13. I liked them before Pop took off, when they were less popular and made more diverse and detailed figures.

They didn’t take note from beaniebabies?

If you are into labubu, remember it will bust

As a person who lived through Beanie Babies I have 0% surprise. I can’t believe how much of this plastic waste they actually sold.

I hated those things. If you have a bunch of these things there’s a good chance you’re a hoarder.
