TBF, Japan’s gov’t and especially the defense sector has been urging the need for Japan to have nuclear subs even way before, given the ever-increasing threat and instability in the region.

A defense expert panel, held a month prior to Trump’s Asia visit, has advised for acquisition of next-gen submarines likely having nuclear propulsion

As with other things like nukes, Japan has long had the capabilities to make them. It has always been not a matter of „can“ but rather a matter of „will they“. I guess the new administration is taking advantage of this recent development in the region to be able to push for much needed deterrence.

Important note is that these are nuclear powered and do not need necessarily carry nuclear weapons

    3. You know…. Maybe allowing Japan to have a nuclear sub might not be a good idea.

As with SK, it still feels like a weird choice for them to want nuclear powered subs; theyre much much more expensive than conventional ones, and their only benefit is range/endurance, but neither Japan nor SK really needs that when the main threat they have is China who is right next door.

it’s insane Japan doesn’t already have nuclear subs given the constant threat of Godzilla lurking off the coast

Since the proximity of N. Korea and China is fairly close, I would suggest that one or two of their submarines should be Gotland class from Sweden.
