In 1966, interracial marriage was still illegal in many U.S. states, mostly across the South.
It wasn’t until 1967, with the landmark Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, that these laws were struck down nationwide, affirming that marriage is a fundamental right for all, regardless of race.

Maryland and Delaware are surprising. I would’ve imagined they already would have been culturally shifted into their current Midatlantic culture that is liberal and progressive than their ancestral Southern culture

And where it was legal it was still not tolerated by any side. Growing up in a disproportionately Italian American community on Long Island any parent would have a stroke if their child brought home someone of a different race but especially black.

Jesus, no wonder my grandma was so racist lol
I live in Missouri and my grandma was born in 1927.
I remember we were watching TV one time together (she was babysitting me while I was home sick) and some pharmaceutical commercial came on that had an interracial couple.
She was not happy lol

Would it make you feel better or worse to know that the other states were not far ahead? Ie California 1948
To my knowledge interracial marriage has been legal in Iowa since 1851.

One small interesting point on this map: Maryland DID have an anti-miscegenation law in 1966, but managed to sneak in repealing it in early 1967 before the Supreme Court delivered their opinion on *Loving v. Virginia* in June of that year

The only reason it was legal in Utah is that there are only white people there so it’s not a concern.

[Alabama didn’t officially make interracial marriage in the state legal on paper until *2000*, and over a third of those who voted opposed repealing the ban.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Alabama_Amendment_2)
