She posted “fuck Israel” and spread baseless conspiracy theories that Israel “allowed” Oct 7 to happen. Did so in a forum specifically to other students.
If a student posted “fuck China” and posted conspiracy theories meant to stir up hatred against China and Chinese people, I hope there would be consequences as well.
Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences.
‚James Turk, the director of the Centre for Free Expression at Toronto Metropolitan University, agrees. According to him, the school grossly misinterpreted those definitions and, in any case, has no authority under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to punish speech others don’t like.
„To object to a student’s post because it was critical of a country, it’s just beyond the pale. It’s outrageous,“ he said, adding he hadn’t come across a similar case before at a public school.
Turk, who has reviewed both posts, said he didn’t find them to be violent.
„There’s not a hint in there that the student was blaming Jews or making any kind of antisemitic statement,“ he said, adding that conflating criticism of a state with hatred toward its inhabitants is wrong.‘
People constantly conflating criticisms of Israel’s government and leaders as attacks on Israelis, and Jews, makes addressing real antisemitism more difficult.
When even the headline says „Anti Israel“, you know that the kid is right.
We have Canadians in Canada saying „Fuck Canada“, and hearing things like „Fuck Trump, Americans are idiots, who wants to visit this shithole“, without over-thinking how an American immigrant student will feel all the time. As long it’s not personal we’re not only should be allowed to say this but we need to say these things. Ironic, given many Israelis are saying fuck Israel on a daily basis.
