First and foremost, it looks like an urban/rural divide. The cities went Democratic, the country went Republican.
Secondly, it looks like a racial map, which best predicts partisan lean in the South. For example, sparsely-populated Brunswick County in the southeast is majority African American and it’s solidly in the blue column.
Looks like it was gonna happen this year
In 2024, Harris won Virginia by 5 points. Spanberger won by 15 points.
Why do we color counties like this in reporting statewide elections? We don’t have an electoral college of counties, it’s a pure popular vote.
EDIT: I did not mean this comment to be a criticism of OPs map. I meant: „Why is showing results county by county so prevalent in reporting statewide elections?“
OP has answered this in other comment replies. Its because its the simplest way to do it, and good enough for a first pass.
You Winsome, you lose some.
Someone is going to look like this and scratch their head over how Spanberger won when there’s more red.
She absolutely crushed the Republicans in her state, Republicans haven’t lost this bad in Virginia for a while. If they want to remain competitive nationwide they need to change some things – this is a TEN POINT SWING from 2024.
I’m all for equality, but the title doesn’t make sense when you’re choosing between two women candidates.
Winsome lost by even more than I thought she would. Terrible candidate who ran an awful campaign.
Very good graphic to show that land doesn’t vote.
This isn’t the right map. Spanberger won Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, among others that are shown in red here.
Winsome’s [„That’s not discimination“](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ZNT0o1uikQ4) reply was one of the most memorable, and clueless, debate moments of the year.
Maps like these are always so funny to me.
If current margins hold, Abigail Spanberger, with 57.5% of the vote, will have the best performance of any Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Virginia since Albertis Harrison in 1961.
Looks like they would have elected a woman regardless.
How did a black woman become the Republican candidate
„LOOK AT ALL THE RED COUNTIES! MUST BE RIGGED“ lmfao
The last time I saw a map like this, reddit informed me that those red counties were racist because they voted against a black woman. Since those blue counties voted against a black woman, should I assume that they are now racist?
Perfectly example of maps not voting
