This is wonderful news for everyone who cares about protecting our home planet. I’m an American who spent a few months in Brazil, and I loved it. While I was there I learned about the massive wealth that was extracted from their country during the colonial period. In modern times, very wealthy nations, many of whom are former colonial powers, are asking the Brazilian government to protect the Amazon Rainforest for environmental reasons. I believe these wealthy nations should compensate, in part, efforts to preserve the rainforest.

The Brazilians are incredibly proud of their country. If they saw the unmolested amazon rainforest as part of their national identity and national pride, this would bring about lasting change to the political calculus around the issue. Which means we should give them recognition and respect for any preservation efforts they make.
