My favorite movie memory of Diane Ladd is from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Martin Scorsese’s 1974 romantic drama.
She and Ellen Burstyn are sitting in lounge chairs in an alley behind the diner where they both work, taking a break. Both in pink waitress uniforms, collars laid open flat, with eyes closed, faces raised and shiny with sweat in the hot noonday sun. Ladd’s character has a great speech about the large cross she always wears being made up of dozens of safety pins. Lovely scene.
I heard Ladd on a talk show once saying how pleasantly surprised she was that all the Oscar nominees received a nice plaque. She had been nominated for Alice. Didn’t win an Oscar, but won a BAFTA for that role.
She just seemed a lovely person. Rest in peace.
