It’s urbanisation. Population moving from rural settlements to cities.
Is the pattern of settlement in Astrakhan basically following the Volga? It’s noticeably wider than rover and road patterns elsewhere. Also surprising how empty the surrounding area is. Compare it to the southern Urals or Caucasus for example.
Even if it’s mostly land, it’s still a big country. That’s a lot of people.
It would be interesting to see how it compares to all of Europe.
