A lot of Indian states, including Delhi can learn a lot from Kerala’s model. They are not afraid to run fiscal deficits even when they receive less than the mean revenue from the Centre.

Sounth India always gets a shorter end of stick when it comes to getting money from Central Indian Govt. Yet they are doing better than most of the northern states who are enjoying perks without contributing much. It’s very unfair to Southern states.

Would be neat to see a more modernized-civilized India in my lifetime.

There was another report which claimed many adivasi people in kerala are in extreme poverty.

If this report is true kudos to the kerala govt to eradicate poverty

    5. Did they actually, or did they do it the CCP way by changing the grading so that less people qualify to be in extreme poverty?

Reminder that the primary difference between India and China is exactly 1 communist revolution.

As someone from Kerala, who’s been living in multiple countries since my early twenties, happy birthday to Kerala! It was born in November 1, 1956.

I have a lot to say on identity, being a Keralite ; also an Indian. The ongoing online discourse on India, optics, etc.

It must have been about a decade ago. I was at an Erasmus party, talking to this Hungarian girl. One of her very first questions was: “Why don’t you eat beef in India?”

Back then, hardly any Indians were around in most European countries. The stereotypes were totally different from what you see online today (not dehumanizing, but still absurd).
I remember spending 15 minutes passionately explaining Kerala politics, beef fry, secularism etc. and still failing to convince her that the “India = no beef” narrative wasn’t universal.
Even now, in some restaurants, waiters “kindly” remind me that this dish has beef.

Fast forward to today, and the stereotypes have somehow gotten worse. Under every Indian-related post online, there’s always some genius typing “do they shower?”, or “imagine the smell.” Which is hilarious, because growing up in Kerala, people would literally shame you if you didn’t shower at least once a day. Now in Europe, I personally know folks who shower just twice a week.

And then there’s the “street sh**” stereotype. I almost never saw that in Kerala. While, female safety is a serious issue we have to improve, I would still feel far safer walking at night in Kochi or Trivandrum than in Paris or London.

      That’s the weird part.
So many of these “Indian stereotypes” feel alien and unrelatable as a Keralite. It’s like telling a German “you people are terrible at organising things,” or telling an Italian “your cuisine sucks.” It just doesn’t make sense and it’s just confusing.

Disclaimer: Not trying to do the whole “Kerala better saar” routine. It’s just to mention that the diversity of India is unfathomable, even for an Indian.

    8. Haven’t they heard? Extreme poverty is coming back in style. It’s going to be the hottest trend in the US soon.
