Wild to think this whole empire was basically run on silver and catholic guilt

The *claimed* territory of New Spain. As with New France, basically all of Louisiana was only nominally under Spanish control.

    3. Monterey is where Bakersfield is, and it’s spelled wrong.

Look how far inland San Diego is.

What did this actually mean in practice tho? Like how many Spanish were active in the north

*Claimed territories. The Spaniards got smoked when they try to assert their authority in New Mexico and Texas from natives, much less controlling inland Louisiana and inland California.

    6. Santa Fe was founded in 1610. It’s the oldest state capital in the nation.

It’s also the highest in terms of elevation at 7000′. It’s 1000′ above the next highest (Cheyenne.)

The history of European settlement in this are began in 1598 with Juan de Oñate’s expedition up the Rio Grande. We tend to see Mexican/Spanish people as immigrants, but many modern New Mexico Hispanos are descendants of folks who settled here centuries ago. New Mexico didn’t become a state until 1912.
