Brasilia just showing up to the party 400 years late like nothing happened

Brazil’s previous capitals (Salvador and Rio de Janeiro) were also founded in the 16th century, which interestingly makes Montevideo the last colonial (iberian) south american capital to be founded.
Not too familiar with its history, but I’m guessing Buenos Aires proeminence made a „competitor“ unnecessary for most of history.

Brasília was such an impressive project that the city was literally built in just 5 years!

Can anyone recommend any good books on the early colonialisation of South America and its European settlements? I find it a fascinating time but am having a tough time finding books that cover the era

Quito should be in another color, it was already an important city before the Inka and later the Spanish conquered it. Lima is more an edge case with less continuity, but there are older urban settlements n the area of the modern city.

Wasn’t Quito originally native settlement?

Wild to think from 1492 first landfall for Europeans, to 1535 Pacific Coast centers of government.

It’s wild to think about how similar in time each of these settlements were. The Spanish were just traipsing around everywhere and fairly quickly. It also probably shows how they used native infrastructure to do so, with places in the Andes that should have been a bitch to traverse fairly easily done with Inka Nani and other trails.

Right around the time of the Spanish conquest of the Americas. So they didn’t really change anything.

Surely some of these cities were developed from existing indigenous communities that had been around for centuries. Were all of them built entirely by European settlers, or is there a deeper story?

You’ve got to be kidding me?
**This map is MINE!! I made it**. You can check the original post, I’ll link it. Heck I painstakingly added the blue squares by hand to represent the capitals!!! Wtf I never imagined I would get one of my shitty maps „stolen“ 😂
