    1. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping a “turning point” in Canada China relations after their first formal leader level talks in eight years at the APEC summit in Gyeongju. He said the meeting creates opportunities for Canadian families, businesses and workers and welcomed Xi’s invitation to visit China, while Xi urged a return to healthy, stable and sustainable ties. They directed officials to swiftly resolve trade irritants such as canola, seafood and electric vehicles and discussed cooperation on energy, agriculture, manufacturing, climate change and international finance. Relations had been strained after China detained two Canadians following Canada’s arrest of a Huawei executive and Beijing maintained tariffs on several Canadian goods. Carney said immediate tariff relief was unlikely but noted possible quick wins like easing travel restrictions as he seeks to balance security with economic goals and expand exports beyond the US.
