these people lack self-awareness. I s2g we as a nation need like mandated time off the internet to touch some grass lmao

    2. >In 2022, she tied with Lia Thomas for fifth place at the NCAA Championships, leading her down the path of anti-trans activism.

This is her „villain origin story“.

    3. >Never seen a professional swimmer get drowned by a member of Congress.

      🤣 Vicious and hilarious

    4. This has honestly made me laugh out loud. Just try to think of a clever comeback, “get a real job” is just top tier.

Riley Gaines is a poser. AOC’s criticisms are warranted as they push back against Gaines‘ whole schtick while emphasizing just how disingenuous it is that she has exploited a climate and culture of fear, transphobia and misinformation to thrive. Worse yet, the backlash from conservatives is just as equally superficiall and performative.

Gaines tied for fifth place in a competition back in 2022 and has since abandoned the sport to become a right wing caricature and symbol of transphobia.

Gaines‘ entire identity, her reputation and even her finances are all tied to this culture war grift.

The whole situation begs the question, how come her competitors didn’t milk the situation for all it was worth to become prominent conservative figures of hate and intolerance?

That said, this debate has become a political obsession for Republicans. Riley Gaines has personally capitalized off of this right-wing fixation and all the resentment, division and fearmongering that has come along with it.

Gaines and her supporters rely on several myths and culture war grievances to push their transphobic talking points and narratives on the American people, leaving no room for nuanced discussion.

Moreover, and despite conservatives referring to all transgender people as „mentally ill,“ it’s actually attitudes and legislative efforts from Republicans that pose a risk to the mental health of the transgender community especially.

      For instance:

      > A study by The Trevor Project found that anti-transgender laws and societal rejection significantly increase the risk of suicide attempts among transgender youth.

The GOP push for anti-trans legislation is actually doing disproportionate harm to this vulnerable group of people, including consequences like rising mental health issues in response to bullying and alienation. These are largely environmental factors. Meaning it’s actually transgender individuals who require our support and compassion; something most conservatives would disagree with.

I also want to draw attention to a massive contradiction. Because it’s these same Republicans who have, *time and time again,* shown us that they have no sympathy for women in general. In fact, they often subscribe to a hyper-masculine, anti-feminist, misogynistic worldview.

Republicans have normalized sexism within their circles. They denigrate women’s rights; claim that women’s independence movements are eroding institutions like „the nuclear family“—a myth that’s quickly dispelled by examples of conservative family and relationship dynamics.

I’ve witnessed these same Republicans treat women like second class citizens; even referring to women’s sports as a waste of time and resources.

I even remember—shortly after the recent election—seeing Trump supporting men posting misogynistic remarks like „YOUR body, MY choice!“

And all of a sudden you expect me to believe that Republicans actually care about protecting women? No, this is obviously not the case….

The *real* goals for Republicans include alienating the trans community and endangering their lives; restoring antiquated and misogynistic gender norms; rolling back women’s rights; obstructing and/or reversing all efforts that have tried to address gender inequality and among other objectives, integrating their anti-LGBTQ attitudes and policies into every aspect of our lives.

Challenging the lady who consistently brings receipts to a debate sounds like a bold move Cotton, let’s see how it plays out.

I could almost take the grifters seriously if they had someone with even a small percent of the conviction Cortez shows.

    7. Riley would lose to AOC on MSNBC, FOX, NBC, CNN, TikTok, Twitch, OnlyFans, Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, IGLive, and MySpace.

    8. silentgiant87 on

i look forward to seeing how she mutilates herself with plastic surgery to fit in with the other grifters

Who the fuck is Riley Gaines? Did she say the same thing to all of the US Representatives from her state(assuming she is a US citizen)?

    10. tommyjaspers on

Riley’s eyes are too close to each other – I am mistrustful of any such person. Kirk had that same inbred look as her.

    11. AngryBlackNerd on

A person becoming an online personality for ending up in 5th place is such a perfect microcosm of this administration.

    12. Here’s a little gem from her Wikipedia page:
‚In 2023, Gaines said that Thomas shared locker room space with her while still possessing „male genitalia“.[^([27])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riley_Gaines#cite_note-paper-27) This incident began her activism.‘
‚Possessing‘ sounds a little bit demeaning towards male genitalia. I think that most men consider it to be an equal partnership.

    13. Titfortat101 on

A classic case of someone who didn’t want to put in the hard work or accept that maybe they’re not the best and instead put blame on others. Not to mention rage baiting to get attention.

    14. DistractedPhoenix on

The headline is confusing, I thought Gaines told AOC to get a real job….

This just shows how bottom of the barrel conservatives need to go to find a talking head

    15. PhotosyntheticFill on

Fox news and Republicans are struggling for the face of their fascist movement

    16. Because that site is so shitty to try to read from, here’s a summary of the exchange:

      – Gaines posts a picture of AOC, Bernie, and Mamdani together at Mamdani’s recent rally with the comment “We’re being destroyed from within.”

      – AOC responds with “Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn’t have come in fifth.”

      – Gaines goes on Fox News and said, “She can defend socialism; I will defend capitalism. She can defend removing God; I will defend embracing a biblical worldview. She can defend child sacrifice; I will defend the sanctity of life. Any of the radical, insane Democrat policies and platform that they stand for, I will debate the opposite. I’m challenging AOC to it here.”

      – AOC responds “And I would like to challenge this person to get a real job,”

    17. Is there a link to this actual clip somewhere. I’m not sure if it’s just my browser but on this dailydot website all I can find is a bunch of tweet screen shots, a video from X/twitter that is from fox news w/o AOC, and the main video when I play it is a 4-min long clip that is completely unrelated to all of this..

I swear right wingers exclusively run as heels now. Not even cool heels, just buttholes.

    19. She is leading on onlyfans! They should add sex positions to next year’s Olympics cause she got that down! New category is full anaconda throat swallow, she got this!

    20. WAAAAAAAAARGH on

“Transphobic activist” is such a hilarious term. “Yeah I’m fighting the good fight for my rights to be a dickhead and to strip others of theirs because I don’t like them :(”

    21. Ok_Swing_7194 on

Imagine being so traumatized that you tied for 5th at NCAAs that you then go on a life long tirade against an entire community. Talk about being a total weak minded entitled loser

    22. BertOfHouseLopez on

Bro really has a villain origin story… and it’s not even good! It’s like an incel wrote it for his intro to creative writing class

    23. BabyScreamBear on

„The causative association… between ‘eyes too close together’ and being ‘thick as pig shit’ is not sufficient to say it definitely causes ChristoFascist MAGA losers. But it is very suggestive,“ – RFK, probably

    24. Bluesky posts are making it into articles now? Thats bigger than Gaines swimming career.

    25. Is she the one that complained about tying with a trans woman and left out the fact that there were 4 much better cis women that beat her? I legit forgot that happened until I read her name because she isn’t worth thinking about ever.

    26. tomtomvissers on

I love that she ‚challenges‘ AOC to a debate and then just mentions a bunch of topics that don’t even need debating or explaining. „She can defend socialism“ AOC is not a socialist, she just wants people to make a decent living and have healthcare. „She can defend removing God“ AOC isn’t anti religion, she just thinks America should remain a secular state. „She can defend child sacrifice“ AOC just wants women to have bodily autonomy. It’s so insane to me that Americans live in a country where things that are fairly basic human norms in most other Western countries are ‚up for debate‘ like that.

    27. The fact that I know who ‘Riley Gaines’ is means that’s he’s winning. The whole thing is attention seeking engagement bait.

    28. I liked it better before these Grifters ( Gaines, Katie Miller, Mrs Kirk) were all over the place.

    29. Why do so many of the trump people have these very vague vacant eyes? It’s weird once you start noticing it.

    30. — validating the sanctity of life

How about advocating for the release of the Epstein files to validate the sanctity of his victims’ lives?

    31. I’ll still never understand why these morons keep trying to take shots at AOC. You’re going up against one of the most brilliant people in Congress current, and she’s got a track record of knocking a ton of people down a peg. Seriously.

    32. SimplyMadeline on

Like why would AOC debate her? What kind of crazy ass demand is that? Should members of congress just debate randos?
I demand that Mike Johnson debate Ina Garten. Let’s have Nancy Mace debate Jake from State Farm! (I guess the difference here is that normal people know who Ina and Jake are, which is not the case for Riley Gaines)

    33. OlorinRidesAgain on

What does this woman do for a living. That race was a lifetime ago. Another from the grift circus

    34. Took it personally that Riley Gaines was criticizing us nerds participating in Advent of Code.
