Saturday Night Live’s resident Donald Trump impersonator James Austin Johnson admits that parodying the president is “super-dark” compared to when he started.
Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that the “sands shift,” when it comes to Trump. “It used to not be as terrifying when he had moderate people around him who were trying to stop him. Now they’re all gone and his enemies are powerless and paralyzed to stop of any it, which all comes across as super-dark,” he said, noting that the challenge now is, “How do you find what’s funny within that?”
The parody isn’t funny at all anymore. It’s just scary and it feels like they’re making light of it. I find myself nervously laughing but wish they wouldn’t even do it.

His Trump has basically never been a parody. His impression is spot on, but it’s not comical at all. There’s no exaggeration or anything else that typically passes for parody. To the point where I don’t think I’ve ever laughed at one of the jokes. It’s just JAJ up there acting like Trump. If anything I would think Trump finds it flattering.

One of the most surreal moments I’ve ever seen on television was the episode before the 2024 election, where SNL did a cold open with “Trump,” and they didn’t even write jokes — they just used direct quotes from him. If anything, the USA has become a parody.

Something I’ve always found funny is in the first term, all the people around him were assholes and mini-Hitlers, and now that he’s in his second term, all those folks were heroes trying to stop him and now the folks around him are assholes and mini-Hitlers. Someday we’ll get a president worse than Trump, and all the Resistance/No Kings people will say „Trump wasn’t so bad compared to this guy!“. And of course people will reply here and say that will never happen, but I’ve already watched it happen with Bush Jr.

If there’s not some sort of alien: earth spoof with RFKj infecting Trump with a brain worm, I don’t care

They should probably stop doing it, or go more extreme with it almost like South Park. Or make him more like Dennis Reynolds

It has gotten to the point where it’s hard to tell which parody is the real one.
