Oversimplified summary: The PDF (People’s Defense Force) and TNLA (Ta’ang National Liberation Army) start attacking Mogok as part of Operation 1027 in 2023. The TNLA [capture the town ](https://apnews.com/article/myanmar-mogok-lashio-shan-kokang-taang-mndaa-e1d1b94abde78ac8048ca39ffbf2d341)with PDF support on July 24, 2024. Lashio is also taken by the TNLA’s ally, the MNDAA, around the same time. Under Chinese pressure, the MNDAA eventually give up [Lashio without a fight](https://www.rfa.org/english/myanmar/2025/04/22/mndaa-lashio-junta/) to defend. The junta then initiate plans to attack TNLA and PDF positions (especially with elections coming up in December 2024 and January 2025). TNLA is still in the fight, but loses many positions. Then, the United Wa State Army (largest non-state armed group in Myanmar, but physically neutral) announce cessation of large-scale weapons transfers to TNLA.

Come October 28, 2025- the TNLA [withdraw from Mogok and Momeik ](https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/10/29/myanmar-rebels-to-withdraw-from-two-towns-under-new-china-brokered)under Chinese pressure, but PDFs still remain. Meanwhile, the remaining Three Brotherhood Alliance member, Arakan Army, is now virulently anti-China and is [actively aiding PDFs](https://www.irrawaddy.com/news/war-against-the-junta/arakan-army-tightens-siege-on-hill-base-guarding-myanmar-junta-arms-plant.html).

Keep in mind that the TNLA formed in 1992 while the PDFs formed in 2021 with muskets and FGC-9s. By the way, no NATO power supplies the PDFs; they do not have TOWs or Stingers.
