Can we provide a parallel to black/white population density as well?

I wonder if there is any correlation between committing crimes and being incarcerated?

I like this viz, good job. What id like to see next is normalizing by demographic ratio. maybe incarceration rate (b/w) – population (b/w)
thanks for sharing!

Probably has something to do with the difference between average income for white and black households? I imagine the difference is higher in darker blue states

Some states like CO are much less diverse than states like MA, so you’ll obviously see more white people incarcerated there.
Colors/data should be normalized to account for different amounts of black/white populations across different states. Not saying that will vastly change the outcome, but that would be the proper way to do this.

Appalachia and the Deep South are historically more violent in general. Seeds sewn back in the 17th century English migration patterns. Wider spread up north bc the culture of the south was brought north with Black migration into white areas occupied by relatively non violent whites (lands settled by Puritans, Quakers, and German Lutherans).

It’s all about Milwaukee in Wisconsin. White cops in a very mixed city. Just doesn’t work. 😡

Awful legend. This formula calculates the ratio of the incarceration rate for White people to the incarceration rate for Black people, not the black/white insurrection ratios.
Taking a stab, please advise if you see it differently.
Formula = (J_w / P_w) / (J_b / P_b)
Where:
J_w = Number of White people in jail
P_w = Total number of White people
J_b = Number of Black people in jail
P_b = Total number of Black people

Milwaukee is just north Chiraq. Even worse is Kenosha and Racine which are between them. A good friend from college, of Jamaican descent, was from there. His mom loved he had all white friends at school. He was lucky. At our graduation, most of his Racine friends were DIW’s. Dead, incarcerated or walking wounded.

I would assume that a map of the rural vs urban distribution of the black population would look similar. There are few states outside of the former slave states that have a large rural black populations similar to the former slave states.
Add to that the fact that most of the people that moved out of the South during the Great Migration moved to urban areas.
And rural life is generally more conducive to staying out of jail.

Is that the number of people who were sentenced to prison in the State or who are actually in prison in the State? With private prisons, prisoners are moved around the Country.

Holy telling a story Batman.
Now I’m not American.
But this tells me what I’ve otherwise read.
That the south is *much* more integrated than the north. Southern African Americans commit crime relatively in line with other Americans.
Northern African Americans have a separate culture all their own, which has not redounded to their benefit…. At all.

Basically, criminality in the south is similar between whites and blacks; whereas criminality in the midwest is much lower among whites than among blacks.

Why do they incarcerate black people at a higher rate than white people?
Fast-Penta on
The states with higher rates on this map tend to have lower incarceration rates overall. Anyone who’s spent time in both Alabama and New Jersey could tell you that the white people in Alabama are much more likely to be criminals. The map suggests that being surrounded by violent assbackwards white people makes things nice in absolute terms for Black people.
A more interesting map would be showing overall Black incarceration rates.
