“free cooling” , yeah I’m gonna need some kind of scientific paper about that which demonstrate practical real-world scenarios of “free cooling” in space. As far as spacecraft go, lack of conduction to another medium is effectively lack of cooling. Now let’s put some modern 4U rackservers in there!

Aside from the huge problems with cooling, the impact of launching everything and the fact that you’re either building in a ton of redundancy or discarding systems when the wrong component fails because a technician can’t just swap it out.
Feels more like a hype fuelled gimmick

Okay, of all the problems that hosting a datacenter in space would cause, I never thought about *consumption of fossil fuels* as a problem.
Because it would be ridiculous.

How much carbon is used to get all the equipment up there?

Yeah, this one’s only a matter of time. Free energy, no need for (fresh) water, launch and storage costs coming down . . . I’m betting this will happen sooner rather than later.

The fact that money is being spent on a question as stupid as whether we should put data centers in space is yet more proof that we should be taxing $billionaires MUCH more heavily.

Space; Known for its amazing properties of heat dissipation, ease of maintenance access, and cost effectiveness. Surely AI companies that are already valued at 10x lifetime revenue will have budget to run their data centers in space!
I want to hope no one is dumb enough to invest in this vaporware, but I keep thinking back to NFT’s…

Yep gotta keep that carbon from filling up… err… space? You know, that endless void.
