With kids on field trips we are constantly counting them to make sure we didn’t forget any
They were there only one day. It’s possible they died before the ship left.
The sad part to me is none of the crew or 120 other passengers seemed to notice ‘hey y’know that old lady on the trip with us? I think she’s gone.’ Like, not one Boy Scout or Good Samaritan took stock of the old ass woman!?
Shameful.
That’s an enormous lapse in safety procedure to not have a staff member escort any traveler back to the port and not complete a final count.
Some interesting details here. Was the organized excursion done through the cruise line or a separate one that is offered at these island stops?
Because the cruise ship will not wait for passengers that are late because of delays caused by none cruiser live offered excursions.
When reading this, at first I had my doubts that the cruise line did not know a passenger was missing/late when they left because cruise lines keep track of passengers that get of and on the ship, whoever the fact the the ship returned to the island gives credibility to that claim.
To which I have to ask, how the hell did that happen? Usually when passengers are left behind the cruise line will inform the port authorities, unload the passengers belongings (including passport) so that the passenger can make arrangements to either go home or meet the ship at a future stop. So someone messed up at the cruise line.
The fact that she fell and died isn’t on the cruise line though, even if they are the I’ve that connected to passenger with a excursion organizer.
No offense to the lady but if it was that hot and she’s 80, what is she doing climbing a mountain, same question for the organizers, why would they allow people in that group to take part in that section of the excursion.
I think the strangest part is that no one escorted her back to the ship when she couldn’t continue the hike. I went on a hiking excursion with another cruise line, and they sent several staff members with us. When an older gentleman wasn’t able to continue, one of the staff escorted him safely back to the boat. Seems like common sense, especially for an elderly passenger on a hot day?
She fell off a cliff, them leaving her behind was not the main reason she died. They didn’t escort her down the hill she decided to climb. I’m not sure the cruise line is on the hook for this.
Dying alone at 80 on a sunny island might be how I want to go, but I’m sure it was not the case for this poor lady.
Seems quite likely she fell off the cliff before she was “abandoned”.
Baffling that anyone would let an 80 year old who isn’t feeling well go off unattended on a hike. Honestly it would’ve been a bad idea for anyone to go off by themselves unless they were familiar with the area and healthy.
Not excusing the cruise line here at all, but maybe an unaccompanied 80 year old shouldn’t go on a hill climb.
A lot of these official excursions are literally a couple random guys that don’t know what the fuck they’re doing, but they give the cruise line a huge cut and everyone is happy.
It’s unclear if the trip off the boat was a cruise ship excursion or not.
I could see them being liable if it was part of their offering, but I think it’s unreasonable if the individual just disembarked on their own while the ship was in port.
It would be like being mad at a daycare for losing a child when the child went missing at 7pm after the daycare was already closed for the day and the child wasn’t in their care.

What kind of cruise doesn’t do I head count? I was on a really cheap, shitty small ship in Greece and even they gave each person a card to scan when you return to ship to do a headcount.
It’s Australia – the company should know better and do counts. We hiked into Kata Tjuṯa earlier this year and our tour group did a passenger count on the bus before leaving. There were about 25 of us in total on the tour.
Again? That’s 2 in a couple of days time!
Sue the heck out of these yahoos who could not even do a proper count of the number of passengers.
It’s routine for a cruise liner to not perform a headcount. These are grown ass people responsible for themselves. Tragic she died, but the cruise company owes her no duty of care on an excursion off the boat.
I have some sympathy here but let’s be honest… Too many people are t taking personal accountability for their own health, safety and well being.
For trips and excursions you essentially waive any liability, you should only take on physical activities within your health abilities.
It blows my mind that certain people feel entitled to take adventure vacations when they are sick , old or have disabilities and do things well beyond their capabilities YET demand accomodation because they paid money for a trip, cruise or air fare.
If people want and need full time care you better front it. Don’t expect a cruise ship of thousands to wait for you because you couldn’t make your timings.
80 year olds should not being going on hikes they can’t handle with cruise ships. Problem solved.

What’s bothering me is, the ship didn’t do a count. A count I thought was standard??? I know from experience they will leave you behind if you wait too long but they’re still supposed to do a damn count to even see if someone is behind.
Oh my god I thought 80 people were found dead.

They didn’t do a basic head count on a cruise, something even volunteers know how to do on school field trips. It won’t bring her mom back but that family is about to sue the hell out of that cruise line
