This predates the erroneous name change from “Department of War” (original to President George Washington) to “Department of Defense,” which occurred on 18 September 1947 ([source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_War))
Incidentally, the last purely-defensive war we ever fought (*i.e.*, our territory (Pearl Harbor) was attacked) had already ended; indeed, WWII was the last properly-declared (Congressionally-declared) war we ever fought.

This is why Texas keeps the Rangers and State Guard ready at all times, rather than expecting any help from DC.

It would have been nice if this had the date on it.

Back when states like CT were actually industrial powerhouses, not just bedroom communities for hedge funders.

Document predates the Emergency Shipbuilding Program ramping up naval production across the country. This map was likely used to
justify expenses to diversify war production efforts across the nation. 18 shipyards participated in the program including all of the west coast and much of the gulf coast which are mostly missing from the map in OP.
Given the importance of the oil fields in Texas this map is complete baloney- to say nothing of California

Holy shit I tried to get this map back years ago, and couldn’t find it anywhere. Thank you!

I suspect a modern version would be more proportional as the MIC likes to spread its production out across the country in order to have leverage over the various senators and reps.

Most here don’t seem to understand what the map shows.
This is not military presence, nor how much military industry there is, but it shows relevance for economic functionality (essential industry) and thus **which parts would be most relevant to protect.**
This map is old, it’s dificult to pinpoint when exactly, but the mayor difference for today would be that California and Texas would be bigger but the rust belt smaller. The rest would still be about the same.

Modern times, California (manpower and food) and Texas (oil, food, manpower) would be insanely important.

this seems to predate all the ports that were built up on the west coast & Gulf
