And yes, I did color it by hand using GIMP’s pencil tool, a circle with a scaled radius of 62 miles, and the combined powers of ADHD hyperfixation and the isoperimetic inequality.

Interesting map, nice work! Elevation presents so many challenges in our lives, that we see vertical distances completely differently to horizontal ones.
If the Burj Khalifa was lying down on its side, it would be a 5-10 min walk. Mt Everest would be a 30 min bike ride or 5 min drive. Space would be a one hour drive!

The thing is energy needed to go up is astronomically higher than going left/right or down.

Does this map account for elevation? (ducking and running for cover)

Is the Caspian sea closer to space according to this map?

It obviously has no bearing on how suitable it is for launching into space, but Florida being nearly entirely red *feels* ironic.

It’s sobering to think that all of us are less than 100 miles away from the freezing vacuum of space — and also less than 40 miles from the burning hell and pressure of the earth’s mantle. Life is fragile and precious.

Space starts 10 to 20 km up (poles versus equator).

does this take elevation into account? is that why the red line thickness alternates so much?

I wonder if the majority of mankind lives closer to space or the ocean.
