This is true, we’re not dealing with someone who plays fair or rational.

And yet… Canada remains the only G7 country that has not struck any kind of deal (whether you Trust any deal with Trump or not), so clearly whatever strategy we’ve been using has not been effective. Carney has repeatedly promised to deliver a new trade deal — July 16, then 21, then August 1, then by end of summer, then… sometime. A couple weeks ago we were told it’d be at the summit in Asia this week.

Meanwhile, we have repeatedly given ground to no gain, eg reciprocal tariffs and the digital services tax, and watched Carney obsequiously cozy up to Trump (I wore this red tie just for you) despite the many promises made to do the opposite during the campaign.

And now the gong show over the ads the past couple of weeks, including both Carney and Ford attempting to throw each other under the bus when it is obvious both were supportive of running them right until it blew up in their faces.

Sorry, but none of this makes it seem like the world class economist and negotiator Canadians were sold has the slightest clue what he’s doing.

This is not Trump’s fault.
It’s his wish.

There is absolutely no scenario that Trump will make a mutually beneficial deal with Canada, regardless of the ford tv ad.

Unlike the other countries he’s made deals with, what he mainly wants from Canada is Canada itself….and unrestricted access to our rare earth minerals.
Some lumber, the agricultural products, the aluminum/steel…they are all temporary shortage rounding errors to the US.

With the overall tightening of the North American economy, those temporary supply/cost hits to the US aren’t going to be as painful as would in a housing and manufacturing boom period.

Short of agreeing to be annexed, our only real play is to assume that the US won’t buy our stuff at all and we need to find countries that will buy it.

We should also assume that the CUSMA deal will NOT be renegotiated. It will be voided and the US will want to negotiate separately with Canada and Mexico. Trump in no way wants countries to negotiate together on anything. He already threatened repercussions a few months ago in that regard.

There are industries in Canada that will lose tens of thousands of jobs. And there are a few that will completely disappear.
But We will do ourselves and our kids a horrible disservice to try and save a few sinking ships at the expense of building new and bigger ships not dependent on just one country.
