It isn’t hard to figure out that criminals don’t cause societal harm from a jail cell, and of they’ve had chances to sort themselves out already, then it’s for the best to just lock them up for longer periods of time

Canada does not have an out of control crime problem, the country is comparatively very safe, most repeat offenders are not dangerous, and tinkering with sentencing does not prevent crime.
Tough on crime politics feels good to scared people but it doesn’t address the root causes or crime (poverty, inequality) or the critical underfunding of courts and prisons.
Does PP explain how we would pay for all this expensive incarceration? We can’t just let everyone out, but we also can’t keep everyone in. There has to be sensible risk management. Maybe the cut off has to be adjusted a bit, but since the public only hears about when a repeat offender offends – not when one stays straight or when it’s a first offender who offends – maybe we need more info before we jump on PP’s bandwagon. We already know he is a deliberately „low information“ loud mouth.

Providing more social worker services for struggling families would be a massive help. Start at the beginning to support families not at the end.

The trouble is that prisons also hurt our society. They have their place, but use them too much and you can ruin your whole society. We should always be skeptical of anyone who advocates for increasing their use.
