    1. I don’t think Cardiff Castle is very well-known, but I liked it when I visited it – so many different eras in there.

    2. Obviously missing hundreds, if not thousands. I live in East Lothian and can think of five within five miles of my village.

Dirleton (one of the five I was thinking of that I didn’t notice at first) is hilariously misplaced. It’s about 40 miles north of where it’s placed on the map.

Hits the big ones though. Nice map. Would suit a tea towel.

There’s a disappointing and significant absence of castles, on that map of castles.

Being from Northumberland there’s a castle almost every mile up the coast- Ford, Etal, Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick, Bamburgh (which isn’t on an Island), Lindisfarne to name a few. I do love a castle 🩵

    5. The map names are „Castles of Britain & Ireland“ and „Castles of the British and Irish isles“ … so of course it becomes British Isles in this sub.

    6. For any non-British readers, this probably shows something like 1% of our castles. If they’re including wooden castles, which one map is, there would have been one in pretty much every large village.

There are also thousands of stone castle ruins everywhere.

I remember playing inside Harewood castle as a kid, jumping across doorways in the towers where the floor had rotted out hundreds of years ago. Running around the crumbling battlements at very top of the walls.

It was always on private and unaccessible land but us kids found a way. Unsurprisingly, they’ve now put a huge fence around it to prevent public access to what is an incredibly dangerous structure.

    7. To me [Bodiam Castle](http://google.com/maps?sca_esv=93059d63d912020b&rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBGB901GB901&output=search&q=bodiam+castle&source=lnms&fbs=AIIjpHxU7SXXniUZfeShr2fp4giZ1Y6MJ25_tmWITc7uy4KIeuyr9ljWioGWIw0oasFed3pekTy9ejcwggIWHfXrlrOSGrh2X_EMuX3vWLEhC3Rsgup_V2icg-W_zKg3K2l_FIOPRuWncJVTX82i3FksYeHtJwVhQGDI1qTkL9ekQgBbsHwKOCOjzsbCQK-AvH-8GJuCIXQuE09-7aqN-1Bw_SA2XDJUNA&entry=mc&ved=1t:200715&ictx=111) and [Caerphilly Castle](https://www.google.com/maps?sca_esv=93059d63d912020b&rlz=1C1CHBF_en-GBGB901GB901&biw=1920&bih=911&output=search&q=caerphilly+castle&source=lnms&fbs=AIIjpHz30rPMyW-0vSP0k1VTNmO_w7HWzdssfT8–zJ8qNsl8L7-5q__n7BwgNeB-qyHnROq4kq5QtH1DPgAP9eGH3ypAdflutoqhDPP7AV-wGDsIquP6H5nXXiT3aE5j2cqSBgRgoLQcg5V1Jy79cQ5Qy9DLZkQ4fu_HbLdLQU1BlWnkOX_ERXm-UrSNTYPu-APq1jGYE2tWxbzmtu_sZ76tTeOcpVdi4S6Dkt5QeypmCZSHks4inY&entry=mc&ved=1t:200715&ictx=111) are the quintessential castles and I’ve always thought that they are both perfect for anyone needing a location for filming location or a stock photo to use for a fictional castle in films, series, or games.

However, [Corfe Castle](https://www.google.com/maps/place/Corfe+Castle/@50.640129,-2.0587958,17z/data=!4m15!1m8!3m7!1s0x48730635ab543309:0xa66455ef732e3ed3!2sCorfe+Castle!8m2!3d50.640129!4d-2.0587958!10e5!16s%2Fm%2F07k84vf!3m5!1s0x48730635ab543309:0xa66455ef732e3ed3!8m2!3d50.640129!4d-2.0587958!16s%2Fm%2F07k84vf!5m1!1e2?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MTAyMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) might have to be my favourite. While there may be more impressive castles in the UK and Ireland, the ruins of Corfe Castle are really elevated by its surroundings – including the village and heritage railway. For any foreign tourists that want the romanticised pre-modern rural England of the popular imagination, it’s hard to beat views such as [these](https://www.dorsetguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/swanage-railway-06.jpg) [here](https://www.dorsets.co.uk/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/photos/corfe_castle_town_view.jpg).

It’s not the British isles according to any of these maps, so why call it that?

    9. Framlingham Castle but no Norwich Castle? Didn’t even know Framlingham had a castle lol

    10. Big-Option3118 on

Why change the name from the actual names on the map? Just out to insult Irish people?

    11. It’s an absolute travesty that the first few maps have Cardiff Castle in place instead of the masterpiece that is Caerphilly Castle – widely regarded as the most complete medieval concentric castle with moat system in Europe.

    12. Indifferent_Jackdaw on

The Irish one is shite too. Cashel is mostly Ecclesiastical, they missed out Cahir which is spectacular and Lismore is 90% Neo-Gothic designed by Pugin.

    13. Image one they forget Dublin Castle, image two they do too, but then in image four they put Malahide Castle where Dublin Castle is and Dublin Castle north of it???

    14. Dukeofchutney1 on

This is an awful map! It is missing hundreds of medieval castles, fortresses, ruins and keeps from all over Britain and Ireland, but instead includes country manors from the 19th century! 😑 Bodium Castle isn’t there and that is still the template nearly every toy company uses for a wooden castle play set…

    15. JamesClerkMacSwell on

It’s not even the lack of castles per se – because obviously this is a basic cartoon map – but the choice of famous and most important castles that’s poor: eg in the first map missing Stirling and Caerlaverock (triangular!) in Scotland and Beaumaris and Harlech in Wales (2 of the 4 greats in N wales alongside Conwy and Caernarfon)…

    16. ClarenceClaymore1 on

What’s the British isles? It’s called Britain and Ireland. Ireland don’t recognise the term so either call it what it is or take Ireland off your little map please.

    17. > British Isles

You Brits really are obsessed with Ireland lol

Still not a British Isle. Deal with it and read the map/room.

    18. for all non-british readers. „British Isles“ is a colonial term rejected by the people of Ireland and is not used by either Irish of UK govts.

I stayed the night at Warwick castle when I was like 12! It was pretty cool as a little history nerd, I got to do a falconry course too >:3 which I think was the most fun of all.

    20. Cdoolan2207 on

These are quite shite. I even see the local castle in tulllamore is now located on the cork/kerry border. Was it moved brick by brick?

    21. Lung-King-4269 on

Forget a moment what the isles are labelled. These are ancient ruins built on ancient ruins. The hills of doggerland.

    22. ukpunjabivixen on

I’m a teacher and we often talk about castles in history lessons. We even visit some castles when we need a field trip.

There are lots missing on this map. Even just the 3 go-to castles for our school field trips are missing.
